Taught by Him: When Christ Becomes Your Teacher Again
Ephesians 4:21 – “If indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus.”
Have
You Truly Been Taught by Him?
We live in a time when Christian
language is everywhere—podcasts, posts, preachers, programs—but the presence of
Christ, as a Teacher, seems strangely absent from many hearts.
We’ve become educated about Jesus.
We can quote Him. We’ve heard sermons on His life, His death, His resurrection,
His return. But have we been taught by Him?
That question burns through the
words of Paul in Ephesians 4. It’s not a rhetorical line—it’s a piercing
invitation.
“You have not so learned Christ, if
indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in
Jesus…” (Eph. 4:20–21)
This is the dividing line between information
and transformation, between merely knowing doctrine and being shaped by a
Person. It’s possible to study the words of Jesus without submitting to the
voice of Jesus. And it’s in that gap that deception grows, apathy forms,
and our walk becomes a routine rather than a relationship.
Christ is not looking for
spectators. He is calling for students. Not merely those who admire Him,
but those who will sit at His feet and learn.
Learning
Christ – A Relational Discipleship
Paul’s language is arresting: “You
have not so learned Christ.” He doesn’t say "learned about
Christ." He says “learned Christ.” It’s not academic. It’s
intimate.
To learn Christ is to walk with Him,
to receive correction from Him, to surrender our logic to His truth. He doesn’t
just teach with words—He teaches with wounds, with silences, with daily
whispers that pierce through our pride.
When we are truly taught by Him, we
learn His humility, not just His power. We learn His obedience,
not just His authority. We learn His surrender, not just His strength.
This learning isn’t always pleasant.
Sometimes it is through pain that He teaches us perseverance. Sometimes it is
through delay that He teaches us dependence. Sometimes it is through silence
that He teaches us how to listen again.
“I will instruct you and teach you
in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.” —Psalm 32:8
In the school of Christ, we are not
mass students in a crowded lecture. We are individually watched, led, and
corrected—with love in His eyes and purpose in His discipline.
The
Truth That Is in Jesus
Paul does not say “the truth about
Jesus.” He says “the truth is in Jesus.” It lives in Him. It flows from
Him. And when we are truly taught by Him, that truth invades and transforms
us.
This truth is not passive—it is alive,
piercing, and purifying. It confronts everything false within us.
- It exposes the old self – the lies we believed,
the masks we wore, the ways we survived.
- It renews the spirit of our mind – not just our
thoughts, but our deep desires, values, and intentions.
- It clothes us with the new self – crafted in the
image of Christ, in true righteousness and holiness.
This is the core of Paul’s message
in Ephesians 4:22–24:
“Put off the old man… be renewed in
the spirit of your mind… and put on the new man.”
But here’s the warning: The truth
in Jesus will break us before it rebuilds us.
It may shatter our religious performance. It may challenge our comfortable
compromises. It may demand that we walk away from people, patterns, or
positions that keep us in darkness.
The truth in Jesus is not an idea to
be debated. It is a person to be obeyed.
He teaches not only your theology—He
teaches your footsteps. He’ll nudge you about what to watch, warn you about who
to avoid, whisper to you not to send that message, remind you what to say, when
to stay silent, and even which path to walk today. This is not superstition—it
is the supernatural way of walking with Christ. When you are taught by Him, every
detail begins to come under His direction.
And you will know when you're truly
being taught by Him—because He will not flatter you, but free you. He
will not entertain you, but expose the lie and offer life.
Signs
You Are Being Taught by Christ
Many ask, “How do I know if Jesus is
really teaching me?”
Here are the signs:
- You are convicted more often than comforted—and
yet that conviction leads to freedom, not guilt.
- You are no longer satisfied with partial obedience or
empty busyness.
- You begin to desire righteousness more than
reputation.
- Your inner thoughts start changing—even before your
circumstances do.
- You are learning to say “yes” to God in secret, when no
one else sees.
These are not the marks of religion.
These are the signs of a soul being taught by Christ.
A
Wake-Up Call to Re-enroll in His School
This is a prophetic moment for many.
You’ve sat in churches. You’ve read
devotionals. You’ve attended conferences.
But when was the last time Jesus Himself taught you something that shook
you? That stripped you? That healed you?
There is a holy invitation today—not
to do more, but to come back to the school of Christ.
To silence every other teacher for a
moment.
To close the book and say: “Lord, speak. I am listening.”
To lay your head on His chest like John, and learn the rhythm of His heart.
To let His truth pierce your excuses and clothe you with holiness again.
“I am the Lord your God, who teaches
you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.” —Isaiah
48:17
He still teaches. The Spirit still
speaks. But only those who return as students will hear the whispers
again.
What
Does God Expect of You Today?
To stop managing truth and start
submitting to it.
To stop using His words and start listening to His voice.
To sit down again as a student—broken, willing, teachable.
To let the truth in Jesus transform your daily life, not just inform
your theology.
Prayer
Lord, I
confess—I have learned so much about You, but I want to be taught by You. I
want to be led by Your eye, changed by Your truth, broken by Your love, and
rebuilt in Your likeness. Remove every layer of pride, noise, and independence.
Teach me again. Let the truth that is in You become the truth that lives in me.
Amen.
Final
Whisper
I sat in noise, but missed Your
voice,
I chased the truth, but lost the choice.
Now teach me, Lord, in stillness deep,
To cast off lies the old man keeps.
I long to walk in truth again—
To be renewed, restored by Him.
