Who Then Is This?

Finding Hope in the Lord Who Governs Your Storm, Silence Your Fears, and Heals What's Broken

“And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, ‘What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.’” — Mark 1:27
“And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, ‘Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?’” — Mark 4:41
“They were astonished beyond measure, saying, ‘He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.’” — Mark 7:37
“No one ever spoke like this man.” — John 7:46

The Question That Changes Everything

You're tired. Your heart is a heavy stone in your chest. The nights are long, haunted by the same looping thoughts: the bills you can't pay, the relationship that’s crumbling, the diagnosis that stole your peace. You’ve tried everything—the late-night Google searches, the hollow advice from well-meaning friends, the desperate prayers that felt like they were hitting a ceiling. You’ve felt forgotten. Abandoned.

That feeling, that ache... is the very moment Jesus walks into the room.

In the Gospels, people were so astonished by Him that they couldn't help but ask, "Who then is this?" They saw Him cast out demons with a word. They watched Him command the wind and waves into silence. Even the temple guards, sent to arrest Him, returned empty-handed, whispering, “No one ever spoke like this man.”

That question is not ancient history. It’s the desperate cry of a soul in need. You may not be in a fishing boat in a storm, but you are in a storm of debt, illness, or depression. You may not be watching a demon scream in a synagogue, but you are wrestling with an unseen torment that keeps you awake at night.

And Jesus still walks into such moments. His authority is not a memory—it’s an ever-present reality waiting for your desperate invitation.

1. His Authority Over Darkness

Have you ever felt a shadow fall over you, a crushing weight that whispers, "You're not good enough," "You'll never change"? It’s an addiction that feels stronger than your will, a fear that chokes the breath out of you. This isn't just a mood; it's a chain.

In that synagogue, Jesus didn't give a lecture; He spoke a command. "Be silent, and come out of him!" One word from Him, and a lifetime of torment shatters. What shadow in your life needs to hear that command today?

Hear this now: Jesus' authority over darkness has not expired. The powers that hold you captive are not stronger than the One who commands them to go.

2. His Authority Over Your Storm

The disciples had seen storms before, but this one was different—fierce enough to make seasoned sailors cry out for their lives. And in that chaos, Jesus simply stood up and rebuked the wind and sea: “Peace! Be still!”

Immediately, the wind stopped. The sea became glass. The disciples' fear shifted—from the storm to the awe of realizing they were standing in the presence of the Lord of Creation.

Your storm may not be made of wind and water, but it still roars—bills piling up, deadlines pressing, relationships breaking. You've tried to row your way out, but the waves keep coming. Jesus doesn't just calm storms; He governs them. The winds that shake your world answer to Him.

3. His Authority Over Your Brokenness

They brought to Him a man who could not hear and could barely speak. Jesus took him aside privately, touched his ears, and spoke one single word: "Be opened." Instantly, the man could hear. His tongue was loosed. The people’s response still echoes: “He has done all things well.”

You may be in a place where something feels permanently broken—your health, your marriage, your trust in people, your confidence in God. Jesus still touches what is beyond human repair. He still restores what no one else can fix. And when He is finished, your life will testify, “He has done all things well.”

4. His Authority in His Words

When the temple guards were sent to arrest Jesus, they expected a troublemaker. Instead, they found themselves disarmed—not by weapons, but by words. They returned to the religious leaders without their prisoner, saying simply, “No one ever spoke like this man!”

When Jesus speaks, His words pierce through confusion, strip away lies, and plant seeds of faith. His voice has the power to silence shame, reframe your past, and redirect your future. If you feel lost in the noise of opinions, doubts, and fears, lean in to hear Him today. His word to you will not just inform—it will transform.

The Tragic Mistake: Astonished but Unchanged

Do not remain a spectator to your own life! The miracle is not a story for others; it is a destiny for you. I declare to you today: your astonishment must become surrender. Your "How?" must become "Yes, Lord." Stop admiring the miracle and start living it. The same authority that silenced the storm and healed the broken is waiting for your desperate invitation.

Don't remain in awe. Bow in surrender.

Step Into His Authority

Where do you need His touch today? What is the loudest voice in your life? The voice of debt? The voice of shame? The voice of doubt?

Close your eyes. Listen for His voice. Speak it out loud: "Jesus, You have authority over this." Write it down. Take one small, bold step in faith—make that phone call, forgive that person, pray that prayer. Do something that says, "I believe what I just read."

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You are the One whom the winds and waves obey, the One before whom demons flee, the One whose touch restores, and the One whose words give life. I bring my storm, my darkness, and my brokenness to You. Speak, Lord—command my heart to be still, my chains to fall, and my life to be whole again. I believe You have done all things well, and You will do so again in me. Amen.

The Hope-Filled Invitation

He has done all things well. And He will do so again, in you.

He is not the God of yesterday's stories, but the Lord of your tomorrow. When the storm rages, when the darkness gathers, when the brokenness feels permanent, just remember that single, silent question echoing from the past and into your present: "Who then is this?"

He is the answer. He is your hope. He is your healer. He is waiting.
